China wins Asian Youth u-19 badminton

World and Asian badminton superpower China, showcased its strength at the junior u-19 youth level, as it dominated the Mixed team event matches at the Asia Youth under-19 Team championships badminton tournament held at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, India.

In the Group A - round 1 matches, China comprehensively defeated Syria and Bangladesh 5-0, and Japan 4-1 to enter the 2nd and final elimination round stage of 8 countries. In the elimination rounds, China first Hongkong 3-1, then India 3-0, and in the finals defeated Malaysia 3-0 to maintain their 100 percent win record, and win the championships.

The final 8 teams (2 teams from each of the 4 groups) who had earlier qualified for the 2nd elimination stage round of this badminton tournament were:
  • China,
  • Malaysia,
  • Hongkong,
  • Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) ,
  • Japan,
  • India,
  • Thailand,
  • Indonesia.
While China was the winner of the Asian Youth team championship 2011 title, Malaysia finished second in the runner-up position, and India and Indonesia were the losing semi-finalists.

For India, Sameer Verma once again proved his mettle as one of the best youth player of the country, as he winning all the matches that he played in. This at a time when his elder brother Sourabh Verma is also making a few waves on the international badminton circuit at the senior levels.
Pratul Joshi also played well in the match against China, when he put up a tough fight of 3 very close sets, though he ultimately lost that match.

This Asian junior tournament is significant because it highlights the playing strength of the young badminton players in Asia, many of whom will probably go on to improve further and dominate the World badminton events in the next few years time.

The individual events of the Asian youth tournament are now in progress. The major highlights for India in the individual youth events that have been held so far are as below:

Mens Singles: K.Srikanth, Sameer Verma and Pratul Joshi have reached the quarter-final round.
Womens Singles: 4th seed  P.V. Sindhu has reached the quarterfinals.
Women's doubles: 8th seeds K. Maneesha / P.V. Sindhu have reached the quarters.
Mixed doubles: B. Venkatesh/ G. Ruthvika Shivani have reached the quarters.
