Thailand Open-2011: Indian Challenge ends

.

The Indian challenge at the Thailand Open-2011 (The SCG Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold-2011 badminton tournament) came to an end today, as the last 3 remaining Indians in the fray, Saina Nehwal, P. Kashyap and Sourabh Verma, lost in the quarterfinal rounds.

The Thailand Open GP Gold-2011 badminton tournament is being held at Bangkok in Thailand from 7th to 12th June 2011.

Saina Nehwal, who seemed to have been struggling for form right through the Thai Open tourney, could not overcome the challenge of 7th seed Xuerui Lee of China, as she lost the quarterfinal match in straight sets 13-21, 12-21.
Earlier also in the first 2 rounds of the Thailand Open-2011, top seeded Saina Nehwal had struggled to get past her opponents and had been stretched to 3 sets in both her earlier matches.

P. Kashyap, India's top men's singles badminton player, who was seeded 14th at the Thailand Open-2011 badminton tournament, was up against World. No.4 and top seed Chen Long of China, in the quarterfinal match. Though Kashyap fought well in the first set, he finally threw in the towel, as he lost to Chen Long by a score of 18-21, 5-21.

Sourabh Verma, India's upcoming young badminton star, who has been consistently doing well on the international circuit since his great performances at the India Open superseries earlier this year, was up against World. No.8, Sung Hwan Park of Korea in the quarterfinals of the Thailand open.

Sourabh Verma played exceedingly well as he gained an early lead in the first set and maintained it throughout to win the the first game by a score of 21-16. However Sung Hwan Park bounced back strongly and took the 2nd set 21-16.
The 3rd set was a close affair till the score read 8-8 after which Sung Hwan Park stormed away with a lead and kept at it, to pocket the 3rd set and the match.

Sourabh Verma lost to Sung Hwan Park (Korea) 21-16, 16-21, 11-21.

Nonethless, The Thailand Open-2011 GP Gold, has proved to be a good outing for Sourabh Verma and he has done well to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Prix Gold event. He is still young and as he gains more experience, the Indian badminton fans can certainly hope for some great results from him in the future.

Grand Prix Gold events such as the Thailand Open-2011 are prestigious tournaments on the international badminton circuit, next in stature only to the Superseries badminton events.
