Swiss Open-2011 updates

The Swiss Open 2011 (officially known as the WILSON Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2011 badminton tournament) is being held from 15th to 20th March at Basel in Switzerland. Here are the updates on day 2 of the tournament, from the Indian perspective.

Women's singles qualifiying rounds:
Aditi Mutatkar, the reigning National badminton champion is out of the tournament after losing in close games to Karina Jorgensen of Denmark who was seeded 4th in the qualifiers.

Karina Jorgensen (Denmark) bt. Aditi Mutatkar 21-19, 21-15

Men's Singles men's draw:
Ajay Jayaram won 2 consecutive matches to move into round 3 of the tournament.

In the doubles section India's star badminton women's doubles pair of Jwala & Ashwini have moved to round 2 of the Swiss Open. They came up with a convincing win against their German opponents.
Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa bt. Johanna Goliszewski/Carla Nelte (Germany) 21-15, 21-13

Interestingly a lot of Indians had got drawn against German opponents in the first round.

Matches that are yet to be played today are:
Jwala Gutta/V.Diju vs. Johannes Schoettler/Sandra Marinello (Germany)
Rupesh Kumar/Sanave Thomas vs.Michael Fuchs/Oliver Roth (Germany)
Saina Nehwal vs. Sashina Vignes Waran (France)

As I mentioned in my last post about the Swiss Open, Saina Nehwal has got an interesting draw. She will be playing against French qualifier today, and assuming that she progresses to next round, she is drawn against Eriko Hirose of Japan who defeated her recently at the All-England Open. So that will be a match worth watching as Saina will be trying to avenge her defeat of the England Open-2011, against a formidable opponent.
